Spieghel’s hernia is an abdominal wall hernia in which the hernial orifice is located approximately halfway between the navel and the groin area. This hernia is very rare. However, there is a high risk of intestinal loops becoming trapped in a Spieghel’s hernia, which is why it is important to treat it quickly.
Patients with a Spieghel’s hernia often feel a pulling pain in the affected side of the lower abdomen.
If the hernial orifice is smaller than one centimetre, mesh-free procedures are used. If the hernial orifice is larger, the hernia is treated with mesh, usually using a laparoscopic procedure.
